What Are Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Group 128

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement solution designed to restore the appearance, function, and health of your smile. Made from biocompatible titanium, the implant is placed into the jawbone where it acts as an artificial tooth root. Over time, it naturally fuses with the bone, creating a strong and stable foundation for a replacement tooth.

Implant Post
A titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root.

Abutment
A small connector that securely attaches the implant post to the final restoration.

Restoration
A custom-made dental crown, bridge, or denture designed to blend naturally with your smile.

Dental implants in Brookline, MA offer a reliable, natural-looking solution for replacing missing teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Why Replacing Missing Teeth Is Important

Group 128

Missing teeth can affect more than just your smile. Even a single missing tooth can lead to oral health issues that worsen over time. When a tooth is lost, nearby teeth may shift into the empty space, causing bite problems, misalignment, and uneven wear on surrounding teeth.

Tooth loss can also contribute to jawbone deterioration. Without a tooth root to stimulate the bone during chewing, the jawbone in that area may begin to shrink, affecting both oral function and facial appearance.

Untreated missing teeth may lead to:

Dental implants in Brookline, MA, help prevent these complications by replacing missing tooth roots, preserving bone health, and restoring the function, comfort, and appearance of your smile.

Why You Should Replace Your Missing Teeth

Types of Dental Implants in Brookline, MA

Group 128
Dental implants are a fixed solution for replacing missing teeth. Treatment is planned after a clinical examination and diagnostic evaluation to ensure proper placement and long-term success.
Single Tooth Dental Implant

A single dental implant replaces one missing tooth using a titanium post placed in the jawbone, which is later restored with a custom crown.

When several teeth are missing, multiple implants are placed to support individual crowns or dental bridges for restoring function and appearance.

An implant-supported bridge uses strategically placed implants to support a bridge when multiple adjacent teeth are missing.

Implant-supported dentures are secured with dental implants, improving retention compared to traditional removable dentures.

Full-mouth dental implants are used to replace most or all missing teeth, with implants that support a full-arch restoration.

I had an incredible experience at Brookline Smile Artists! I chose this practice specifically because they specialize in treating patients with TMJ, and I couldn’t be happier with that decision. Prior to coming here, I had consistently frustrating and painful experiences at dentists who didn’t understand the challenges I faced with limited mouth opening.

Dr. Slater was truly exceptional—understanding, kind, and compassionate during all my visits. She took the time to listen to my concerns and even referred me to a great physical therapist in the area for specialized care. When I reviewed my custom mouth guard with her, she made sure it fit perfectly, adjusting it with great attention to detail to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness. Throughout every visit, she made sure I felt comfortable and supported, which made a huge difference given my past anxieties.

If I hadn’t relocated across the country, Brookline Smile Artists would absolutely be my go-to dental practice for life. Their expertise, personalized care, and genuine compassion truly set them apart.

As someone with extensive dental history (braces, implants, veneers, etc.), I can’t recommend Dr. Gary Login's office enough! When I moved to Boston, I was trying to find a new, trustworthy dentist.

When a front veneer broke, Dr. Janna Feldman replaced it and did a phenomenal job! The color matched perfectly. She was thorough, patient, and took her time to explain the process in detail so that I was on the same page and happy with the results. Given past teeth anxiety, it’s a huge relief to have such a reliable dentist.

A bonus is that it’s conveniently located right across from the Coolidge Corner T stop on the green line.

I was referred to this practice by a friend who said everyone at this office is fantastic... she was not wrong! I am an anxious dentist-goer and everyone made me feel comfortable there. Amanda did a wonderful job with my cleaning, my teeth felt like they were glistening! Charlotte took my pictures and was easy to talk with while waiting, and Dr. Login was professional and made me feel comfortable throughout the exam. I highly recommend this dental practice, and I will definitely be a returning patient.

Dental Implant Process at Brookline Smile Artists

Group 128

Every smile is different, so the dental implant treatment is planned based on individual needs and clinical evaluation.

1

Consultation

We start with a detailed examination, including a medical history review, a dental check-up, digital X-rays, and a discussion of treatment goals.

2

Treatment Planning

A personalized plan is created based on the number of missing teeth, bone condition, gum health, and overall treatment requirements.

3

Preparatory Procedures

If needed, preliminary treatments such as tooth extraction, bone grafting, gum treatment, or sinus lift are performed before implant placement.

4

Implant Placement

A titanium implant is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia in a controlled clinical environment.

5

Healing Phase

The implant integrates with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration over a few months.

6

Final Restoration

Once healing is complete, a custom crown, bridge, or denture is attached to complete the treatment.

FAQs

Group 128
How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed for long-term use. With proper oral care and regular dental check-ups, they can last 20 years or more, and in many cases, a lifetime.

Dental implants should be maintained like natural teeth. This includes brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, routine dental visits, and professional cleanings.

Dental implants are a fixed solution, while dentures are removable. Implants stay stable in the mouth and help preserve jawbone, whereas dentures may require periodic adjustment or replacement.

Dental implants are designed to emulate the complete structure of a tooth. The base screw is secured into the jawbone, while the prosthetic tooth takes the place of the tooth’s visible section. Once installed, it closely mirrors the appearance and function of a natural tooth.

Yes, missing teeth can lead to bone loss over time, which may affect facial structure. This can make the face appear sunken or aged. Dental implants help maintain jawbone support.

Yes, dental implants are a well-established and safe treatment in modern dentistry. They are made from biocompatible materials and have a high success rate when placed and maintained properly.
