Login, DMD, (ABOI/ID).

Dr. Login brings decades of expertise in complex restorative dentistry, and he ensures every dental crown procedure reflects cutting-edge standards.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Group 128

A dental crown, often called a “tooth cap,” is a custom-made, tooth-shaped restoration that completely encases the visible portion of a damaged, weakened, or decayed tooth above the gumline. Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth—it restores the tooth’s original shape, size, strength, and appearance while sealing it against bacteria, fractures, and further damage.

Crafted from biocompatible materials like porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, or metal alloys, a dental crown bonds permanently to the prepared tooth structure (and sometimes an implant post).

Unlike fillings or bonding, which only address small areas, a dental crown provides 360-degree coverage, making it ideal for severe cases. At Brookline Smile Artists, our dental crowns are milled with CAD/CAM technology for a precise fit that feels like your natural tooth, often indistinguishable even under scrutiny.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Group 128

You might need a dental crown in Brookline, MA, for these common scenarios:

  • Severe decay or fractures: When a filling won’t suffice, a dental crown provides full coverage.
  • Post-root canal protection: Teeth treated with root canals become brittle; a porcelain dental crown prevents cracks.
  • Cosmetic enhancements: To improve misshapen, discolored, or worn teeth for a seamless smile.
  • Supporting dental bridges or implants: Dental crowns anchor these restorations securely.
  • After orthodontic work: To finalize alignment in cases like closing gaps post-Invisalign.

We use digital impressions and 3D imaging for crowns that fit with micron-level precision, minimizing adjustments and discomfort.

Benefits of Choosing a Dental Crown

Group 128

A well-placed dental crown from Brookline Smile Artists offers transformative advantages:

  • Enhanced Durability: Crowns withstand 200-300 psi chewing forces, 3-5x stronger than natural enamel, which prevents fractures even under heavy biting pressure daily.
  • Natural Aesthetics: Layered ceramics match your exact tooth shade using digital spectrophotometry, creating undetectable restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural smile.
  • Preserves Adjacent Teeth: Unlike bridges requiring healthy neighbor teeth to be drilled, single dental crowns (especially on implants) protect surrounding teeth from unnecessary preparation.
  • Improved Function: Restores chewing efficiency immediately, eliminating pain and discomfort while reducing TMJ strain and related headaches from uneven bite forces.
  • Long-Term Savings: Prevents costly extractions, implants, or replacements with our 5-year warranty, making dental crowns a smart financial investment in your oral health future.

Types of Dental Crowns: Choosing the Right Material for Your Needs

Group 128
  • Porcelain or Ceramic Dental Crowns: These premium all-ceramic options, like e.max lithium disilicate or pressed ceramics, perfectly mimic natural tooth enamel translucency and light reflection, making them ideal for front teeth and visible areas. Completely metal-free, biocompatible, and highly stain-resistant, they maintain brilliance for 10-15 years with proper care while supporting conservative tooth preparation.

The Dental Crown Procedure in Brookline, MA

Group 128

Getting a dental crown at Brookline Smile Artists is a streamlined, two-visit process designed for comfort and efficiency.

  1. Consultation and Preparation: Dr. Login examines your tooth with X-rays and intraoral scans. We numb the area, remove decay, and shape the tooth. A temporary crown protects it while your custom dental crown is fabricated at a top lab.
  2. Permanent Crown Placement: We remove the temporary, test-fit your dental crown, and cement it securely. Bite checks ensure perfect occlusion.

Advanced technology, such as CEREC same-day milling, means some patients can leave with their porcelain dental crown in one visit, eliminating the need for temporaries. Post-procedure, enjoy soft foods initially; full strength returns in 24-48 hours.

I had an incredible experience at Brookline Smile Artists! I chose this practice specifically because they specialize in treating patients with TMJ, and I couldn’t be happier with that decision. Prior to coming here, I had consistently frustrating and painful experiences at dentists who didn’t understand the challenges I faced with limited mouth opening.

Dr. Slater was truly exceptional—understanding, kind, and compassionate during all my visits. She took the time to listen to my concerns and even referred me to a great physical therapist in the area for specialized care. When I reviewed my custom mouth guard with her, she made sure it fit perfectly, adjusting it with great attention to detail to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness. Throughout every visit, she made sure I felt comfortable and supported, which made a huge difference given my past anxieties.

If I hadn’t relocated across the country, Brookline Smile Artists would absolutely be my go-to dental practice for life. Their expertise, personalized care, and genuine compassion truly set them apart.

As someone with extensive dental history (braces, implants, veneers, etc.), I can’t recommend Dr. Gary Login's office enough! When I moved to Boston, I was trying to find a new, trustworthy dentist.

When a front veneer broke, Dr. Janna Feldman replaced it and did a phenomenal job! The color matched perfectly. She was thorough, patient, and took her time to explain the process in detail so that I was on the same page and happy with the results. Given past teeth anxiety, it’s a huge relief to have such a reliable dentist.

A bonus is that it’s conveniently located right across from the Coolidge Corner T stop on the green line.

I was referred to this practice by a friend who said everyone at this office is fantastic... she was not wrong! I am an anxious dentist-goer and everyone made me feel comfortable there. Amanda did a wonderful job with my cleaning, my teeth felt like they were glistening! Charlotte took my pictures and was easy to talk with while waiting, and Dr. Login was professional and made me feel comfortable throughout the exam. I highly recommend this dental practice, and I will definitely be a returning patient.

FAQs

Group 128
Are dental crowns painful?

Modern local anesthesia ensures minimal discomfort during the procedure. Most patients experience only mild sensitivity for 1-2 days and resume normal eating, working, and activities the same day without significant pain.

Porcelain dental crowns average a 10-15 year lifespan, extending to 20+ years with excellent oral hygiene, nightguard use for grinders, and biannual professional cleanings. Bruxism, diet, and maintenance significantly influence longevity.

Dental crowns improve tooth shape, size, and alignment, but don’t address bite or crowding like orthodontics. Dr. Login often combines crowns with veneers or Invisalign for comprehensive cosmetic and functional smile correction.

Not always required, 80% of crowned teeth remain vital without root canals. Only necessary when infection or pulp damage exists pre-treatment. Dr. Login assesses each tooth’s vitality during a comprehensive examination.

Veneers cover only the tooth’s front surface for cosmetic enhancement, while dental crowns completely encase the entire tooth above the gumline for structural support and protection against fractures and decay.
